If you’re thinking about getting braces, one of the most common concerns is: “Will it hurt?” The good news is that while braces can cause some discomfort, it’s usually mild and temporary — and it means your treatment is working.
😬 When You First Get Braces
- You may feel pressure and soreness in your teeth and gums
- This discomfort usually lasts 3–5 days
- Soft foods and over-the-counter pain relief (like acetaminophen or ibuprofen) can help
- Your lips and cheeks might also need time to adjust to the brackets. Orthodontic wax can help reduce irritation.
⚖️ After Adjustments
Every 4–8 weeks, your braces will be adjusted. You may feel:
- Mild aching or tightness in your mouth
- Sensitivity when biting or chewing
- This usually fades within a day or two.
🩺 What About Clear Aligners?
Clear aligners like Invisalign® are removable and typically cause less discomfort than braces. You may still feel pressure when switching to a new aligner tray, but it’s a sign that your teeth are moving!
🪠 Tips for Managing Braces Discomfort
- Stick to soft foods in the first few days
- Use orthodontic wax to cover rough spots
- Brush gently and stay on top of oral hygiene
- Take pain relievers as directed if needed
