Tips for a smooth first week with braces

Getting braces is a big step toward a healthier, straighter smile — but the first week can come with a few adjustments. The good news? With the right care and mindset, you’ll settle into your new routine in no time.

Here’s a Canadian-friendly guide to help you through the first week with braces.

🩺 Expect Some Discomfort

It’s normal to feel:

  • Soreness in your teeth or jaw
  • Irritation on the inside of your cheeks or lips
  • Mild headaches or tightness

This usually fades within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help.

🛌 Stick to Soft Foods

Chewing will feel different at first. Choose:

  • Yogurt, mashed potatoes, and soups
  • Scrambled eggs, oatmeal, and smoothies
  • Soft pasta and cooked veggies

Avoid crunchy, sticky, or chewy foods that could damage your braces.

💦 Use Orthodontic Wax

If brackets are rubbing or poking, apply orthodontic wax to reduce irritation. Reapply after eating or brushing if needed.

🔪 Stay on Top of Oral Hygiene

  • Brush gently after every meal
  • Floss with threaders or use a water flosser
  • Rinse with warm salt water to soothe sore gums

🙏 Be Patient with Speaking

Your speech might sound different for a few days — that’s normal. Reading out loud or singing can help speed up the adjustment.
