No — the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is not intended to replace private dental insurance. Instead, it fills a gap for Canadians who do not have access to dental coverage through work, school, or a personal plan.
Here’s how CDCP and private insurance differ:
🛡 CDCP: For the Uninsured
- Available to Canadians without any private dental insurance
- Based on family net income under $90,000
- Covers essential services like exams, cleanings, fillings, root canals, and dentures
- Income-based co-pays: 0%, 40%, or 60%
💼 Private Insurance: Broader and More Flexible
- Available through employers, unions, or individual plans
- May include orthodontics, cosmetic services, and sedation options
- Often has higher annual limits and fewer pre-authorization steps
- No income-based restrictions
❗ Important:
You cannot be enrolled in both CDCP and a private insurance plan. If you gain private insurance (e.g., through a new job), you must inform CDCP.
