Patient Stories from Our Volunteer Dental Camp

At McLevin Dental, we believe in more than treating smiles—we believe in reaching people. That’s why, every year, our team dedicates time and resources to hosting a free volunteer dental camp in Scarborough. These camps are designed to serve those who may not have regular access to care: newcomers to Canada, seniors on fixed incomes, students, and anyone who has fallen through the cracks of the healthcare system.

But the real story isn’t just in the numbers of patients we see or procedures we perform—it’s in the lives we touch. This blog shares some of the most moving, humbling, and hopeful patient stories from our recent volunteer camp. They are a reminder of why compassionate, community-based care is at the heart of everything we do.

A Young Newcomer’s First Dental Experience in Canada

Samira, a 14-year-old refugee from Eritrea, arrived in Canada just three months before our dental camp. She had never visited a dentist before. Years without cleanings had left her with early signs of decay and gum inflammation.

Her family learned about our camp through a local community center. At first, Samira was nervous. But our pediatric dental team welcomed her with warmth, and her first dental cleaning went better than she—or her parents—expected.

We explained proper brushing technique, gave her a fluoride treatment, and made sure her parents understood how to follow up using their Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) coverage. Samira left with a toothbrush, a newfound sense of confidence, and a smile that beamed with pride.

A Senior Reconnects with Care—and Dignity

Mr. Qureshi, a 72-year-old retired factory worker, hadn’t seen a dentist in more than 15 years. He lived alone, struggled with mobility, and assumed dental care was now a luxury he couldn’t afford.

When he came to our camp, he mentioned persistent gum bleeding and tooth sensitivity. Our clinicians discovered moderate periodontal disease and an abscessed molar that required urgent attention. We treated the infection on-site and scheduled a follow-up at McLevin Dental with CDCP coverage.

But what Mr. Qureshi appreciated most wasn’t the procedure—it was the way he was treated. “No one made me feel old, or forgotten,” he said. “They treated me with respect, like I mattered.”

A Single Mom Finds Relief—and Hope

Renee, a 31-year-old mother of two, came to our camp for what she thought was a minor cavity. But during the screening, we identified a more serious issue: an infected wisdom tooth causing radiating jaw pain.

Renee had delayed treatment for months, worried about costs and missing work. At the camp, we provided a same-day referral for extraction and helped her register for CDCP benefits to cover follow-up treatment. She left not only with pain relief but also with guidance, a plan, and peace of mind.

“This was more than a checkup—it was a turning point,” she told us.

A College Student Finds a Dental Home

Joshua, a 22-year-old international student, had been bouncing between walk-in clinics and emergency rooms to manage his oral pain. Without insurance, he avoided cleanings and relied on painkillers when toothaches flared up.

At the dental camp, he received a full exam, X-rays, and a cleaning. Our team explained the signs of early decay and helped him register for student coverage under the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). He booked a follow-up visit with our team for fillings and now sees McLevin Dental as his permanent dental home.

“I finally feel like someone’s in my corner,” he said.

Building More Than Healthy Smiles

Over the course of the volunteer camp, our team treated over 100 patients—many of whom had not seen a dentist in years. We provided:

Preventive cleanings and fluoride treatments

Emergency fillings and extractions

Oral cancer screenings

Oral hygiene education

Help registering for CDCP and understanding insurance coverage

But beyond the services, we provided something else: connection, reassurance, and a sense of belonging.

Why Volunteer Dental Camps Matter

Community-based initiatives like our volunteer dental camp are essential to building a more equitable healthcare system. Despite advances like the CDCP, many people still struggle to access care due to language barriers, fear, misinformation, or logistical challenges.

That’s why McLevin Dental doesn’t wait for patients to come to us—we meet them where they are. And in doing so, we create a safe, welcoming environment that turns patients into advocates and fear into confidence.

Looking Ahead: Join Us Next Year

Our annual volunteer dental camp is more than a day of service—it’s a statement of our values. At McLevin Dental, we’re proud to serve Scarborough and its surrounding communities not only with top-tier clinical care but also with a deep commitment to outreach and impact.

If you or someone you know is in need of affordable or accessible dental care, reach out to our team. And if you’re interested in volunteering, donating, or helping us expand our impact, we’d love to hear from you.
