Patient Gratitude from Our Annual Smile Days

At McLevin Dental, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to smile confidently—regardless of income, insurance status, or past dental experiences. That belief is the foundation behind one of our most anticipated events of the year: Smile Day.

Held annually at our Scarborough clinic, Smile Day is a special community outreach initiative where we provide free dental services to individuals and families who might otherwise go without care. It’s a day filled with generosity, teamwork, and transformation—but above all, it’s filled with gratitude.

In this post, we’re sharing what makes Smile Day so special, and how the heartfelt appreciation we receive from patients continues to inspire our team year after year.

What Is Smile Day?

Smile Day is a one-day, no-cost dental clinic hosted by the McLevin Dental team, where we open our doors to underserved individuals in the community. We offer a range of basic dental services completely free of charge, including:

Dental exams

Teeth cleanings

Fillings

Extractions

Oral hygiene education

Preventative fluoride treatments

It’s a full day dedicated not to profit, but to purpose. Our goal is simple: to remove barriers to care and provide comfort and confidence to those who need it most.

How It All Started

Smile Day began over a decade ago with a simple idea from Dr. Mohamed: “What if we gave back one day a year, no strings attached?” From that first small gathering of volunteers and a few grateful patients, Smile Day has grown into a full-scale community event that now serves dozens of individuals each year.

We’ve partnered with local shelters, community centers, and support networks to identify individuals and families who may be struggling with dental access—often due to financial hardship, housing instability, or lack of insurance.

Each year, the event becomes bigger, more efficient, and more meaningful.

Patient Stories That Stay with Us

Smile Day is about more than procedures—it’s about the people we meet. Their stories are the heart of the day, and their gratitude is what stays with us long after the chairs are empty and the lights are off.

A few moments that have touched us:

A single mother of three, who had been suffering from tooth pain for months, finally received the filling she needed. Through tears, she told our hygienist, “You’ve given me the strength to keep showing up for my kids.”

A newcomer to Canada who had never been to a dentist before said, “This is the first time I’ve felt seen and cared for since arriving in this country.”

A retired senior living on a fixed income received a much-needed cleaning and oral exam. He smiled and said, “This is the first time in years I’ve left a dentist’s office without feeling ashamed.”

These are the moments that remind us why we do what we do.

Gratitude That Flows Both Ways

While Smile Day is designed to give back to patients, our team walks away just as fulfilled. The thank-yous, handwritten notes, and heartfelt hugs we receive reaffirm that even the smallest acts of care can have a massive impact.

In fact, many of our patients return the next year—not just for care, but to volunteer and give back to others. One young man who received treatment during Smile Day 2022 came back in 2023 to help translate for newcomers. “You helped me,” he said, “so now I want to help someone else.”

How Smile Day Strengthens the Community

Smile Day is more than a charitable event—it’s a bridge between dentistry and community. It reinforces trust in healthcare. It fosters compassion. And it helps break down the stigma that often surrounds dental neglect.

By participating in Smile Day, we’re able to:

Provide early intervention and prevent serious dental issues

Reduce reliance on emergency rooms for dental pain

Encourage patients to begin regular care routines

Highlight the importance of preventative dental health

Showcase the role that accessible care plays in public wellness

It’s part of our larger commitment to oral health education and outreach in Scarborough.

What Patients Say About Smile Day

Here’s just a sample of the feedback we’ve received from Smile Day patients:

“Thank you for treating me with kindness, not judgment.”

“I was scared to come in, but I’m leaving with a smile—and hope.”

“This meant more to me than you’ll ever know.”

Their words are our motivation to keep going, keep giving, and keep growing this initiative.

Looking Ahead: Bigger Smiles, Bigger Impact

As Smile Day continues to expand, so does our vision. We’re exploring partnerships with dental schools, nonprofit organizations, and public health agencies to increase the scope and reach of this annual event.

We’re also working to raise awareness of the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) and helping patients understand how to access year-round support for their dental needs—not just on Smile Day.

Be Part of the Movement

If you or someone you know could benefit from Smile Day, or if you’re interested in volunteering, donating, or helping spread the word, we welcome your support.

Because when we come together as a community—patients, providers, and volunteers—we create something truly special: not just better oral health, but renewed dignity, confidence, and connection.

At McLevin Dental, we believe every person deserves the right to smile. Smile Day is just one way we work to make that happen.
