What is a Class II malocclusion?

A Class II malocclusion, often referred to as an overbite, occurs when the upper teeth and jaw significantly overlap the lower teeth and jaw. It’s one of the most common bite problems treated with orthodontics.

Here’s what Canadian patients should know about this condition and how it’s corrected.

🤧 What Causes a Class II Malocclusion?

  • Genetics (inherited jaw or tooth structure)
  • Thumb sucking or pacifier use beyond early childhood
  • Abnormal jaw growth or delayed eruption of adult teeth

There are two types:

  • Division 1: Upper front teeth protrude forward
  • Division 2: Upper front teeth are tilted inward, but the jaw position is still out of alignment

🩺 Symptoms and Effects

  • Visibly protruding upper teeth or receded chin
  • Difficulty biting, chewing, or speaking
  • Jaw pain or TMJ issues
  • Increased risk of dental trauma to protruding teeth

🛌 How It’s Treated

Treatment depends on age and severity. Options include:

  • Braces with elastics to correct jaw positioning
  • Growth-modifying appliances (for kids and teens)
  • Clear aligners for mild to moderate cases
  • Jaw surgery in severe adult cases where growth is complete

✅ When to Get Evaluated

Early detection (around age 7) allows for the most effective, non-invasive correction. Adults can also be treated successfully — often with a combination of methods.
