A palatal expander is an orthodontic device used to widen the upper jaw (also called the palate). It’s most often recommended for children or teens while their bones are still developing — but in some cases, adults can benefit too.
Here’s what Canadian families should know about this common orthodontic tool.
🥺 Why Use a Palatal Expander?
- Fix a narrow upper jaw or crossbite
- Make room for crowded teeth
- Improve breathing by opening the airway
- Help permanent teeth come in more easily
It can also help reduce the need for tooth extractions or jaw surgery later.
🚪 How It Works
- A custom-fitted appliance is placed on the roof of the mouth
- A small key is used to turn a screw that gently expands the jaw over time
- Widening happens gradually, typically over 2–3 weeks, followed by a retention period
🪠 What to Expect
- A feeling of pressure or tightness after each turn
- Temporary changes in speech or eating
- A small gap may appear between front teeth — this is normal and will close during treatment
✅ When Is It Most Effective?
- Ages 7–14 are ideal because the bones are still flexible
- Adults may require surgically assisted expansion for similar results
